Harmon Benschoter Obituary

Harmon H. Benschoter of Grand Rapids, Ohio passed away April 20, 2024 at the age of 89.  Harmon was born May 25, 1934 to Sylvia (Woessner) and Raymond Benschoter.  Harmon proudly served four years in the U.S. Navy as a torpedo man during the Korean War.  When he returned home, he met Janet (Walerius) and they were married on December 6, 1958. He began working at Johns Manville in the maintenance department and worked his way up to become the plant engineer before retiring after 39 years.  Harm was an avid outdoorsman enjoying hunting and fishing.  After retirement he enjoyed being the captain of his fishing charter on Lake Erie, ‘The Last Dime II’.  He also enjoyed farming and was always ready to lend a hand when needed.  Harm enjoyed traveling with family and friends and was proud to say he had travelled to all 50 states-making the trip to Alaska four years ago to complete this adventure.  Harm was a proud life member of the Grand Rapids American Legion Post 232 where he served as Commander for several terms. He was a member of the Grand Rapids Masonic Lodge, Eastern Stars, and a member of the Grand Rapids Calvery Church.

Harm is survived by his loving wife Janet of 65 years, children Pam Roberts (Mike), Kevin Benschoter (Denise), Kathy McCollum (Jody).  Grandchildren Kristen (Matt), Adrienne, Taylor, Torie, Logan, and Abby.  Great-Grandchildren Harper, Harlow and Matt. He is survived by brother Roger (Bonnie) and sister-in-law Donna and several nieces and nephews.  Harm was preceded in death by his parents Raymond and Sylvia Benschoter and brother James Benschoter.
