Eugene Franklin Holloway was born on July 8, 1943, in Mendenhall, Mississippi, to Hattie Mae (McCormick) Holloway and George Henry Holloway. He accepted Christ as a child at Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church in Simpson County, Mississippi. After completing the 9th grade, Eugene grew weary of country life and relocated to Toledo, Ohio, in 1966, where he met the love of his life, Rosetta McCoy. From this union, their only son, Rodney, was born on October 14, 1977. Eugene also embraced the role of a surrogate uncle to Rosetta's eight nieces and nephews.
Despite not finishing high school, Eugene valued education highly and passionately supported his son, nieces, and nephews in their educational pursuits. He often attended their high school football and basketball games, providing rides and encouragement. Following Rosetta’s passing in 1990 and her sister Dorothy’s passing in 2000, Eugene became a father figure to Brian Keith McCoy while continuing to raise his son, Rodney.
Eugene worked as a steelworker at Toledo Picking and Steel for over 20 years until an on-the-job injury left him disabled. An avid fisherman and hunter, he cherished many overnight trips with friends. He was also a sports enthusiast, closely following various football and basketball leagues. Cars were another passion of his; when his health permitted, he enjoyed tinkering with them as a mechanic in his spare time.
Eugene was preceded in death by his parents, Hattie and George Holloway; three brothers, Johnell, John Lee, and James Ray; and two sisters, Augustine McGee and Kattie Mae Hayes.
He is survived by his son, Rodney E. McCoy; grandchildren Jaelin McCoy, Rodney McCoy Jr., and Ny’Kirah McCoy; sisters Annie Ruth Seals of Oakland, CA, and Gennetta Fitzgerald (Jessie) of Toledo; a brother, George H. Holloway Jr. (Pete) (Betty Jean) of Jackson, Mississippi; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends who will cherish his memory.
