Earl Kenneth Hislop

In loving memory, our family announces the passing of Earl K. Hislop, 73, of Monroe, MI on May 9, 2024.  He was born May 3, 1951, in Detroit, MI to Doris and Earl G. Hislop.  He was proceeded in death by his parents and his sister Judy Giasson. He is survived by his loving wife, Mary (Loretitsch) Hislop of 41 years, his sons Raymond J. (Tracie) Hislop, Daryl J. (Hayley) Hislop, his daughter Melissa N. Hislop, his grandchildren Lucas and Whitney Hislop, and his sister Kathy Stevens.

Earl was a loving husband, father and grandfather.  He valued family above all else and loved his daughters-in-law as if they were his own kids.  He was a true and loyal friend to many.   He married Mary Loretitsch August 28, 1982, and they went on to Texas to make their home. Three years later they returned to MI and settled in Monroe to raise their family.  For many years he served as Cubmaster for Pack 544 with the Boy Scouts of America.  It was just another way to be part of both his sons’ lives.

He was in the Airforce Reserves from 1970-1976 and was stationed at Selfridge Air Force Base.   He was a roofer for many years and started his own business. Later in life he turned to truck driving and eventually started his own trucking company. He retired in 2023 due to illness.  He was an avid fisherman and loved to spend time out on his boat fishing for perch or walleye with Mary and their dog Zoey. Later in life he started fishing for Sturgeon.  In 2017 he caught a 73.5-inch master angler which was the second largest caught that year in Michigan.   He taught his daughter to fish and kept her a well-stocked tackle box.  She was always prepared if any of the neighborhood’s kids wanted to go fishing.  He also loved gardening and raised the best gardens that were weed free.  He encouraged the kids and made it fun for them.  There were contests to see who could grow the biggest sunflowers.

He loved hunting with his boys and hunted deer, rabbit, squirrel, pheasant and Canadian geese.  He thought that was the greatest thing to spend time with the kids doing what they loved.  He loved to teach them and was looking forward to teaching the grandkids. Earl coached his son’s baseball games and spent many hours playing catch with him.  Whether his son played baseball or football his dad was there.   Sometimes he would bring his semi and blow the horn for a good play.  All the kids loved it. Earl and Mary are big fans of the Detroit Red Wings and went to many games over the years or watched them together on tv.  Twice they have met the teams at the yearly Toast of Hockeytown and have attended Hockey Training in Traverse City. Earl traveled in his younger days for 4 years across the USA hitchhiking with a friend.  They camped or stayed at a Salvation Army.  They did some roofing now and again to make some money.  Oh, the stories he told of his time on the road.  His greatest regret was not writing a book about his travels. He will be remembered for his humor, kindness and love.  A light has gone out of our lives, but his love will shine forever.  He celebrated his last birthday May 3rd surrounded by loved ones.
