Bernadine “Bernie” Sorentino Markja, age 82, passed away peacefully at her home on January 5, 2026, after a short battle with cancer.
Born in Detroit, Michigan, Bernadine spent the majority of her life in Toledo, Ohio, where she raised her family, and was a dedicated and successful business owner. She was known for her impeccable work ethic, strong determination and independence, and her ability to meet life head-on and do hard things.
Bernadine was also known for her delicious cooking - especially her beloved gnocchi and lemon rice soup - for which her family often made special requests. She enjoyed spending time with her sisters, working with her plants, and cooking steaks on the grill. Above all else, Bernadine was a devoted mother and grandmother. She found her greatest joy in her nine grandchildren, whom she loved deeply and spoke of often.
Bernadine is survived by her three grown children: Marsha Kreza (Craig) of Canton, Michigan; Allen Markja (Rebecca) of Sellersburg, Indiana; and Lauranne Riddle (Jamie) of Kissimmee, Florida. In addition to her children and grandchildren, she is survived by six sisters and two brothers. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles Sr. and Irene Sorentino; her sister, Margaret Macik; her brother, Charles Sorentino Jr.; and her nephew, John Spolsky.
In accordance with her wishes, no memorial service will be held. Habegger Funeral Services is honored to serve the Markja family. We encourage you to share a fond memory or condolence by visiting www.habeggerfuneralservices.com
